The traditional Children's Regatta off Chaweng Beach this year has been postponed.
Samui are sending a team of five sailors to compete in the Thailand National Youth Games. The Games were rescheduled due to the Floods late last year, and start this weekend in Phuket and run until the 2nd June.
There are a shortage of boats for children entering the sailing competitions, so 'The Yacht Club, Koh Samui' has very kindly offered to provide some of their boats to assist the organisers.
In addition, some of the leading Samui sailors are lending their Optimist Racing "J" sails to the Phuket Sunshine Home Children for the Games.
“The Yacht Club, Koh Samui, would like to thank the organizers of the Koh Samui Regatta for supporting the youth sailing programme on the Island. And it is with deep regret that we are unable to participate in this year's kid's regatta on Thursday 31st May 2012. The Thailand Youth Games has unfortunately fallen on the same week as the Koh Samui Regatta and the youth sailors are participating in Phuket at the Youth Games along with other youth clubs that would normally compete against our kids in the Koh Samui event,” said Michael Fahey, The Yacht Club, Koh Samui.
“We wish all the sailors the very best of luck and look forward to seeing you all next year.”
As they say in Star Trek, the needs of the many out way the needs of the few.......
Organisers of the Samui Regatta will run the Children's Regatta off Chaweng Beach again in 2013, as part of the 12th Samui Regatta.
